Do you know how the government calculates the unemployment numbers? With all the attention being paid to the numbers, I thought you would like to learn the methodology used to arrive at the U.S. unemployment rate.
The government surveys 60,000 households each month in order to estimate the nation’s unemployment rate. i.e., 60,000 U.S. households out of 125.8M households. That means data from 1 out of every 2,097 households is the source of the jobless rate. (source: Department of Labor)
